SECURITY ALERT – July 29, 2019
The Madoff Victim Fund has been alerted to an apparent scam relating to fraudulent payments purporting to be from the Madoff Victim Fund. The scam involves checks that are being sent to individuals via FedEx from “Sheri Whitehead, Wells Fargo”. The checks come with an accompanying letter instructing the recipient to confirm receipt of the payment by text message in order to “authorize” the check before depositing the payment.
IF YOU RECEIVE A CHECK VIA FED-EX OR OTHER OVERNIGHT DELIVERY SERVICE WITH A REQUEST FOR YOU TO TEXT ANYONE, IT IS NOT A GENUINE MVF CHECK.
MVF has recently issued checks as part of our fourth distribution. These checks have been sent by post to addresses MVF has previously used. All such checks come with a cover letter from Special Master Breeden.
NO ACTUAL MVF CHECK COMES WITH A REQUEST FOR YOU TO FURNISH A TEXT OR OTHER ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION IN ORDER TO AUTHORIZE THE CHECK.
If you have doubt concerning the genuine nature of a check, please feel free to contact MVF’s Help Desk at any time.
